My husband and I are in the process of planning a move to San Antonio. I’m so excited because I love Texas. My husband did his AIT at Fort Sam Houston so I rented an apartment there with our two kids. He also went back to complete the first phase of his LPN training at Fort Sam Houston. We’ve been stationed at Fort Bliss and Fort Hood. We enjoyed our time at Fort Hood because we did a lot of travelling. Killeen is so close to Austin. I use to do a lot of my grocery shopping in Round Rock, TX which is just north of Austin and of course we would spend our weekends from time to time in San Antonio.
We also split the time up for Spring Break between Corpus Cristi and San Antonio. When we were at Fort Hood, we took the kids to a Selena Gomez concert in Houston and my husband took me to see Sade when she was on tour in Austin. She is my all time favorite female artist. The excellent thing about Fort Hood is that it’s centrally located so you can get to major cities in a matter of hours. As you can see, I’m very excited about getting back to Texas!
This time when we head back to Texas, we’ll be civilians. My husband is being medically retired from the Army and he’s going to go on to work for the government as a nurse and finish school. We are really looking forward to this new chapter in our lives. I’m not giving up this blog because I’ll still be active in the military community. I’ll still do my shopping on post from time to time and my kids may also end up going to the middle school on Randolph Air Force Base. I’m really looking forward to buying another home and settling down. The constant moving around has taken its toll on the kids and I. My daughter will be 13 years old in November and my son will be 11 in June. I’m hoping that they’ll graduate high school with the kids that they’ll finish middle school with. This is if we decide to not put them in the middle school on Randolph AFB. We haven’t settled on an area of the city yet but we have neighborhoods narrowed down. It’s all about academics for us so we’ve been focused on the neighborhoods that have the highest performing schools according to greatschools.org.
What I love about San Antonio is the fact there is a lot to do within the city itself. There are so many activities. It’s a major city but you still have that small town feel. It’s an excellent choice for retirees because there’s several military installations that call San Antonio home. You have Fort Sam Houston, Randolph AFB, (Universal City) Lackland AFB, Brooks City Base (Although run by the local government, the base is controlled by the US Air Force, which is actually the largest tenant unit.) There are many other installations that you can get to as well.
Once we buy our home, I’ll have the space to really get back into stocking up from extreme couponing. I’m looking forward to having a better variety of stores to shop at to score some awesome deals. I also love the culture of San Antonio and the food there is absolutely delicious. I’ve held off on purchasing things for my new office space until we get there. I’m looking forward to getting started on that as well. If you are in the San Antonio area, I would love to hear from you! As you can see I’m very excited and looking forward to starting this new chapter in our lives!
I’m so looking forward to visiting the following places again:
Six Flags Fiesta TX
Sea World San Antonio
Dave & Busters
San Antonio Riverwalk
And many more!
I’m also thinking about doing some features on budget friendly things to do around the city and venues that offer military discounts. Are any of you ladies stationed in San Antonio? If so please send me an email or a message on Facebook. I would love to hear from you and as always thanks for reading!
